How to Care for Your Everyday Jewellery

A few small habits can help your favourite pieces stay looking their best. Here is a simple routine for cleaning, drying and storing everyday jewellery.

Polished jewellery styled on a warm neutral surface

Your everyday jewellery often goes through more than you notice: hand cream, perfume, sweat, dust and the little bumps of a busy day. A gentle care routine helps you keep track of each piece and spot when it needs a little attention.

Make care part of taking jewellery off

After wearing a piece, wipe it gently with a soft, clean cloth to remove surface oils and residue. If the piece needs more cleaning, use lukewarm water and a small amount of mild soap only when the product care guidance allows it. Rinse carefully and dry it completely before putting it away.

Keep harsh products away

Perfume, hairspray, cleaning chemicals and abrasive products can affect the finish of jewellery. Apply personal care products first and let them dry before putting jewellery on. Remove pieces before swimming, showering, cleaning or exercising unless the specific item is confirmed as suitable for those conditions.

Give every piece its own space

Store jewellery in a dry place, ideally in a pouch or divided compartment. Separate chains from pieces that can catch on them, and keep items from rubbing against one another. For necklaces, close the clasp and lay the chain in a loose curve rather than winding it tightly.

  • Use a soft cloth rather than paper towels or rough fabric.
  • Avoid abrasive polishing compounds unless the care instructions recommend them.
  • Make sure every piece is fully dry before storage.
  • Check clasps and joins from time to time for signs of wear.

When in doubt, check the product guidance

Different materials and finishes need different care. Do not assume that every piece can be cleaned in the same way or exposed to the same products. Follow the instructions supplied with your jewellery, and contact the brand if you are unsure about a particular treatment.

With a gentle wipe, thoughtful storage and a little attention, jewellery care can become an easy part of your everyday routine.
